To Boost HR Productivity, I’ve Experimented with ChatGPT

I wanted to check how ChatGPT can boost HR productivity. I am probably only one, whose feed has been filled with ChatGPT related posts and use cases. I was really interested in how this new innovation will be able to boost HR productivity around the world to save time and achieve more. I have experimented and had some fun with the application and here are my findings.

First Things First, What is ChatGPT?

If you had a social media detox at the beginning of the year, and never heard about ChatGPT, it’s a large language model by OpenAI that generates natural language text. It uses machine learning to understand & respond to text input like a human, trained on a massive amount of data for coherence & contextually appropriate responses.

Where ChatGPT was able to boost my productivity were writing job descriptions, policy drafts, and OKR presentations. Where ChatGPT was near useless was payroll, legislations, stock option plans, anything more complex than your friendly bullshitgenerator neighbour can handle.

How can ChatGPT boost HR productivity in Job Description Writing?

For job descriptions, the tool was able to create an ok baseline for any job description. Included all important elements and structure like, title, job requirements, responsibilities, The first version was a pretty basic version, generated in less than 20 seconds, with sentences like “Oversee employee onboarding, orientation, and offboarding.” When I asked to rewrite it, but make it more engaging to a female audience, the sentence got replaced to “Welcome new team members with open arms by overseeing seamless onboarding, orientation, and offboarding processes.” which was a bit excessive. Overall, to create a new JD, probably would save around 50% but would need to spend some time to make it really personable and stand out amongst many other.

Does it boosts HR productivity for writing policies as well?

For policies, I’ve experimented with a time off policy. Again in 20 seconds, a first draft was ready, including all necessary elements of any standard time off policy any company needs. The base policy it created had more US legislative background, including Jury Duty and eligibility kick-in after the probationary period ends. So I have experimented with a few jurisdictions, where the ChatGPT platform was using some local legislations, but with a few minor mistakes. Overall, the same thing happened as with the job descriptions, the structure was there, the basic needs were met, however, tailoring to your needs is definitely needed. Again, I think it would definitely increase the HR productivity with time spent on the policy, but not a one click ready task.

Presentations is the segment where ChatGPT can really shine

OKR presentation was actually the most easy task for ChatGPT and where I can see it can boost HR Productivity the most. It had a great structure of the elements needed (definition, key components, benefits to the company, alignment with the strategy, setting objectives, measuring progress, case studies, best practices etc.) and pretty good general introduction to the end-to-end implementation, descriptions, whys and hows. As in the previous cases, while textbook answers were spot on, it definitely needs the elements that make the presentation itself enjoyable for participants, fun games, personal storytelling and customized content for the company.

Where ChatGPT was (near) useless

Anything related to payroll, employer’s charges, stock option plans or different employment related legislations, the tool itself offered limited help. It would state the standard operating procedures, like you need to pay taxes. But even after several poking you will end up at the “Note: The rates for employer charges in Hungary may change periodically and it is recommended to check for updates with the relevant authorities.”

Will HR Jobs be eliminated and replaced with ChatGPT?

My short answer is no. Not yet. However, “speaking” with ChatGPT was in general a much nicer feeling vs. googling any related question. The search answers felt better quality, since the answers didn’t need to be SEO optimized and I felt, the answers were more usable and to the point. It is very useful in starting the draft version of any policy, job description, presentation, but to make the content really useful and fun for the organization, the tool won’t replace years of real life expertize.
